There are two types of health insurance available to people that have both parts of Original Medicare

  1. "Medicare Advantage", insurance offered by a private insurer that has a contract with Medicare to replace your Medicare during the annual enrollment period and;
  2. "Medicare Supplements", also known as "Medigap" plans, in which you retain Original Medicare and add a supplement that closes most of the gaps and, although there is no stated cap on payments, effectively limits how much you can spend in a year by filling in most of or all of the gaps. This page will explore Medicare supplements only.

You might want to choose a Medigap policy if:

Medicare supplements are not a primary coverage. That means that they only support underlying coverage and acceptance by providers is not necessary in order for them to see you or get paid for their services. Medicare supplements, also commonly referred to as "Medigap" plans, are in fact like life insurance, for your Medicare. Supplements are not like Medicare Advantage plans and by law cannot include prescription drug coverage.
Prescription drug coverage
may be purchased separately.
